My favorite comment was from a guy who talked about how he'd sometimes sit his car for a few minutes after getting home to just relax and listen to music after a long work day and "the stress of merging back and forth through traffic". Because it's usually not actually about time for those people as much as ego.
Of course, this doesn't stop people from cutting between lanes and tailgating aggressively trying to get to the inevitable line first. So I could go 10 over or under and at worst, I'd probably get to the back of the line with a difference of <10 cars. At the point I come in, the big backup comes at the end, and an insignificant amount of traffic will join the flow in between.
